I just did a search on it last night but never did really figure out what in the world it was- other than it is using silver somehow...(?)

First I did a mistake, my english is not so good, I meant film instead of argentic.
but what you think about silver and so on is the daguerreotype or maybe the Collodion... it was the very early photography.
