This was sort of the opposite of Baldy's quest for ultimate resolution in a stitched cityscape. No foresight. No planning. No tripod. Just 5D Mark II and 50mm f/1.4. 1/40th at f/2.4 @ ISO 200. I made 4 shots, through the Lucite bubble around the stairs, then stitched them in PS.
This is never going to ring some sort of gigapixel bell, but it does show that you don't need to let this kind of opportunity go just because you didn't set out prepared to shoot it. I'm afraid it will be a long time before I get a chance to reshoot. *Sigh*

I agree that panos can frequently be captured free-hand, without a tripod and a pano head. Heresy, I know!! But true! I have some from Yellowstone I am in the process of working up.
