Eddy - a great place for birds in Toronto would have to be High Park... i will tell you though, when u start shooting birds, you will want more and more in terms of range... i find the 200mm end WAAAAY too short for birds, even with a 1.4xTC... i have a 200-500mm lends for birds (bit it
s only useful at f/8 unfortunately), and i'm still looking for a fast fixed prime lens for that... but i can't justify the cost right now for a 400mm or 500mm nikkor eek7.gif

The 80-200 is a great lens, but will not be enough for bird photography unless you are good at sneaking around and the birds are about 4ft tall. If they are in a zoo, it will be great lens for that.

The aviary in Niagara Falls is a great place to go. I try to get down there at least once a year. It is definitely a target rich environment. Here's some shots I've gotten over the past couple of years with my D50 and Sigma 70-300 APO.

On my many trips there I've used everything from my 18-55 II, 50mm f/1.8, and my Sigma 70-300mm APO. I've also used my SB-600 too. Although in the main part of the aviary it is plenty bright in there most days so you don't need a flash, but some fill flash doesn't hurt.

As for the lens, the 80-200 f/2.8 would be a perfect lens. It is actually on the very top of my lens wishlist and will probably be my next purchase (unless a D2Hs comes up that strikes my fancy).

Although if you're using it on a D700, the Nikon 70-300 VR or the 80-400 VR might also suit you well in there. But there is nothing like holding a nice heavy and fast piece of Nikon glass in your hand. I've tested the 80-200 out on my D50 a few times and each time I fall more and more in love with it! I'd say, pick up the 80-200 and if you don't like it you could always sell it to me on a finance plan! :D
