Cheetah girl (NOT a SP :)
We were leaving the house today and as the junior division came down the stairs i said, "You are so not leaving the house in that outf-... Hang on - can I take some pictures?!" Wardrobe and poses all her own :rolleyes:D (She's her own girl, that one is - definitely developing her own style!)
The funny part is that the kind of portraits which really appeal to me and what I ultimately aspire to is NOT "studio" as such, but a more naturalistic look like Mitchell's recent Magic Garage shots of his son or Jeffreaux's senior pix. But I think it's important to know *how* to do this, too, so with single-digit temps (brrr!) I'm continuing to experiment with more formal, indoor shots, and trying to get better at using what i have available to me - learning curve, learning curve.
These were done with the 420ex flash (now gelled with a 3/4 CTO)+ softbox 45 degreesish camera left, quite close to subject, and a tungsten lamp camera right behind me for fill. Still guesswork with combining lights, but I think it's closer (although fill perhaps a touch strong). The background is a rusty-red colour microfiber curtain I picked up for $2 at Goodwill - I think it works quite well!
How's the WB on a calibrated monitor? C&C of course welcomed.
1 Probably my favorite
2. Forgot about the reflection in those specs, so had to clone them out. Whoops...

Thanks, Scott! Yeah, I'm happy with those makeshift flash gels - am SO glad somebody mentioned it in the gear forums (I never would have known about the free swatches otherwise, which is about all that's in my budget at the moment). They'll certainly tide me over for the time being and it does mean I can fill the opposite side with a regular lamp rather than only the reflectors which opens up possibilities.
Thanks so much ... both for the kind words and the continuing "coaching" !
I really like those two as well. She's definitely an original these days...! She starts middle school next year (EEK! When did THAT happen?!) so I just hope that we've managed to teach her the "shoulds" well enough to survive, but without squashing down her uniquely exuberant outlook on life.... Here's hoping!
roflroflrofl
Thanks C. I'm very pleased that I could go in there, set up - with a good idea of where everything needed to be - take maybe 4 test shots and then GO... and they came out pretty close to what I had in my head. This tells me I'm finally on the right track!
I just wish I could guess her mood a little better - she was ok with these but not really that enthusiastic, despite these good shots i got - she just alternates rapidly between "Cool! This is all about ME and lots of Mommy time!" and "Mom... I am SO SICK OF PICTURES". And I'm never quite sure which response I'm going to get until I actually click the shutter....
My daughter is something else as well when it comes to pictures, sometimes up for it and others, well... If we stopped just when she wanted to we'd have very short sessions. And my son!?!? All he wants to do is jump! Forget wanting to take pictures of it!
Good job on getting expressions. She definitely hammed it up well for these.

If responding to a picture I've posted: please, provide constructive criticism. Destructive criticism can go take a flying leap.
If we don't know what could be improved or could have been done differently, we'll never know how to get better at what we're doing.
Thanks! (I thought I'd replied to all these responses in order, but I see i somehow missed yours - apologies!) I really like those two as well
Don't be fooled - we got a few fun ones, but there were WAY more of the other kind... (but she made me promise not to share the ones with the blank face, the tongue sticking out or the un-cute eye-rolling... ) We actually had made a deal for this round, so she had to keep her end of the bargain since I had already kept mine . And secretly I think she quite likes it, she just gets bored with it, and our tiny music room limits movement etc so there just isn't enough physical *space* to goof around and make it more fun.....
Thing is she's GOOD at this - she can turn it off and on like a faucet, so Mean Old Mom that I am.... I keep asking her to let me shoot more and more (and every time I figure out a new technique or get a new piece of equipment!!)
Thanks for the comments!
