Swim meet weekend photos

We have been contracted to shoot a State swim championship (read, lots of kids) and have decided to not print on site. Water, kids and pics just do not mix.

In the past we have shot the events and posted to Smug Mug with decent results.

For this event we would like to provide the opportunity for swimmers and parents to reserve a spot with a $10 non refundable fee and then provide a discount when the total ordered reaches a certain amount, say $30-50.

We have the event sheets and will be loading all the events into specific SmugMug galleries and have links provided both on the event website and on the event heat sheets.

Not sure there is a way on SmugMug or another site to charge a fee for photos that don't yet exist, but yet have people reserve a spot to make sure their kid are "captured".

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

How about just uploading a placeholder pic - something with your logo? Make it cost $10 and use the caption to describe what they're paying for. Then only make the low-res digital download available - no other products. They'll go through the checkout process, you'll get $10/head and confirmation e-mails telling you whose paid.

You know I have thought about doing this for sitting fees and other services so people can pay online. However I didn't know how smugmug felt about it. I could see an issue where you are promising something but smugmug handled the money, and then is the one stuck in the middle if there is a problem. Of course they would be getting a nice chunk of these fees some maybe they would like it. Ask Andy.
    Thanks, Matt
