This shot was taken in the Cradle Mountain National Park, Tasmania, Australia. The sky was heavily overcast and there was some snow about. The light therefore was dull, and the scene does not have any dramatic features, so the original pic was not very interesting. I liked it, however, because of that pearly winter light, for the colors, for the wide spaces and the perspective towards the mountains. I therefore tried to enhance these qualities, and also give the image more drama.

Did I get anywhere near those goals?

In my opinion, i like the landscape, but i think is too much desaturated witch gives a artificial look.
As for the sky, it looks very wierd, like grained or so.
Maybe you could work it a bit more ne_nau.gif, to look more natural.

But wait for a more experienced opinion...
    best regards

Thanks, Paulo. Yes, you are right, it certainly is not a natural look. Maybe I am going in the wrong direction with it, but as I worked on it it began to have a painted look and tend towards duotone, both of which I 'think' I like. It's certainly more 'interesting' than the original, and it was a single exposure, so no chance of HDR.

i like everything you have done in post. i like unique treatments.

i might have tried a closer shot of the fence post also.

if you ever feel the need to work hdr from a single expo then just open the raw file three times with the exposure set in each one as if you bracketed in camera... them merge as HDR...

Hey, Aaron! Thanks for looking in! Well, your positive feeling about this and Paulo's not so sure one make it all the more interesting a situation for me!

Thanks for the tips. I had heard about using the RAW file that way for HDR, but you reminded me of it, and prompted me to perhaps give it a go as an alternative to what I've got now. Great!

Thanks for describing your thought process. I really like the processing here, it give a harsh, sharp edge to the image. Feels cold and stormy.

The processing on the ground portion of the images is pushed a bit, but it might work if that's what you like. The processing on the sky, however, is pushed way too far. The artifacts/noise is the first thing the viewer sees. That's not good. Tone down the sky a bit and you'll have a better image. Take it or leave it. That's how I see it. rolleyes1.gif

Yes, Jeff, I like the sky as a thing in itself, but I've been doubtful about how it gels with the rest of the image. You make a good point and I'll see what I can do to soften the effect. Thanks!
