Sharegroup question

I have been reading about sharegroups, and from what I can tell, they work via cookies. Is that true? I want to set up my site so that friends and family can come to one location and see all of the normally unlisted galleries, and navigate around them. But some of these people refuse to enable cookies, and also, people often lose cookies when they have to clear out their web browser (facebook users often have to clear cache and cookies, for example). Will that mean that my users will then lose access to the galleries?

They must have cookies enabled, sorry. If they clear cookies, they'll need to find & use the sharegroup link again.
