I like to extend the reach of my AF Zoom-NIKKOR 80-200mm f/2.8D ED which is not the AF-S lens but I don't want to lose AF. I'm a n00b when it comes to the world of teleconverters, so tell me what I need to know. What do I lose with a TC? I know I gain focal length so my 200 could get to 300mm but what is lost iin the bargain.
TIA

I rented a kenko 200 1.4x. It was extremely nice. I used it on the same lens.

The Nikon TC-20E II 2X is a nice one

The Kenko is also a nice one that is cheaper.

Both will lose auto focus in poor light. There really isn't a perfect teleconverter.

I used a Kenko 1.4x on my 80-200 with decent results if I stopped it down to ~7.1. AF worked OK as long as light was good. It was the Kenko Pro300 DG. I wouldn't recommend the TC20EII for any type of Nikon zoom.

Kenko 2x Teleplus Pro 300 DG is about $215 at B&H, which would boost the 200mm end to 400. This would mostly be used outdoors, so bumping up to f/5.6 might not be too bad. At least I could remove it if I needed to get back to f/2.8 due to lighting conditions. $215 is a lot cheaper than a 400mm lens !!

Any idea what it does to sharpness?

    TIA
