it is really handy to know what is being used.
What sort of ballhead is that?
I like the simplicity of putting it on the flat.
What do you grab with your left hand? Do you wrap your fingers around the ballhead?

Thank you for the photos. New to macro and I need a flash setup also. I was looking at Lord Vetinari's in his Lighting Tutorial, your's and his are similar, where do you source the ball heads?

glad this is of help.
i hold the lens barrel with left hand, i can actually rest left end of straight bracket on my shoulder/forearm to give a good braced position to hold still.

this is what i use, use a bolt to hold ball head onto bracket at the end instead of flash shoe.
