Wow - Wrestling was a tough shoot

Well, I am starting to get a feel for shooting basketball but wrestling is a different animal. The gym that I shot in this weekend was very dark and I didn't get many shots in the two hours I was there that have potential to send to the paper.

Do you guys have any suggestions for PP that can make these doable? PP is not my strong suit. I shot in RAW but I don't seem to be able to fix things well.

Would you send any of these to the paper? One of the first rules of sports shots is to get the face and I don't have many with the faces. I think #1 is about the only good shot to send on. Thoughts

Thanks,

MD

The WB looks off and the flesh tones look blue to me. I shot in RAW but I don't seem to be able to fix this.

it appears some whitebalancing and exposure/contrast PP woudl clean up these okay. Laughing.gif on the 3rd shot!

Agreed - your WB is all over the place in these.

When you ask about sending to the paper I guess it depends on what the arrangement is. Since you're asking the question I'm guessing it's safe to assume you were not there on assignment for a daily.

Were you there on assigment for a weekly paper? Or are you just going to submit as an unsolicited reader? Having some context around your relationship with the paper and what kind of paper it is will help. In general I would agree shots 2 & 3 would not get print in most papers. Shots 1 & 4 are better (once WB is corrected if the paper prints in color). But, the other question becomes the subject of the photos. Papers will often make decisions on printing photos based upon who the subject is especially if it ties in to a story.

    Let's forget about the NEWSPAPER.

I posted a shot of butts, my error, got slammed.

Wrestling, pretty easy, like all sports, you must anticipate the action. Faces and expressions are easy.

    Almost anything works, I just sit there , using a D3 1/640ss, f2.8, 70-200vr.

WB- i use between 3700-4000k and have now fine tuned a bit to remove a tad yellow cast, probably caused by light reflecting off the Gym floor.

Using a nikon D3, place the focus point on the subject, af-on for focus and wait for the moment.

Have played with some fill flash, it can look nice.

    good luck

    Thanks guys.

The paper was an assignment for a weekly and I only sent in shot #1. It was not a good shot and I will not be covering wrestling until I get much more experience in that venue.

I have a wrestling meet htis Thursday and I am going to go shoot just for hte experience. I anticipate that I will get good shots. It is a completely different environment. Bright and only two schools vs having 18 schools on the last shoot.

    I will post some results.

    Thanks,

    MD

OK, lesson #1 for wrestling. No shots of butts. Just faces with expressions. Got it.

You'll do fine next time. More than half the battle is that you care. If you are new to the sport of wreslting, maybe you can have someone give you a crash course? Good luck!

I have never really been exposed to wrestling much. Wow, I have a whole new respect for the sport. That is a mans sport. I have always been a football/basketbal lguy but wrestling is truly for studs. The way they have their arms, shoulders twisted etc... and having multiple events in the same day after you are already banged up from prior matches... They are tough. I don't understand the scoring or anything but I am starting to understand how to maybe anticipate moves and get in the right position to get a good shot.

And the girls that are in ARE very good. It's just tough for all involved when that male-female match up occurs. Your shot has the most cleavage I've seen, the gals in our area always wear a t-shirt (as do some guys) under their singlets--just different, that's all.

I saw one girl wrestler at my meet. She wasn't on the mat that I saw but I saw her practicing.

The sport is definitely for hte tough minded, let me put it that way.

    Wrestling tips
I am new to this forum and this is my second post however I found a post I could actually offer some advice on. I wrestled for a Division 1 college for four years and have coached wrestling for more than 20 years. If you are able to sit near where the coach is on the corner of the mat you will get more shots of the face because the wrestler will look to his coach during the match more often than elsewhere. Also when a wrestler is starting the second or third round the bottom wrestler will often perform a move called the switch. When a switch occurs you want to be positioned on the side of the mat from the wrestlers; and on the opposite side of the mat from the person who is in the top position. This is because the bottom wrestler will move away from the top person when a switch is performed. If your ready this makes a very good photo because the head will be up showing the face. As you learn the sport you will learn to anticipate what is going to happen. Wrestling is very easy for me, however basketball is very hard. Good luck.
