I am looking for a used 1ds, preferably the 16 megapixel version. Where is the best place to buy used equipment?

Here, of course, because dgrin folks are the best! thumb.gif

If, however, you can't find one here, I'd suggest these as alternatives:

    http://www.keh.com/onlinestore/home.aspx

    http://www.bhphotovideo.com

    http://adorama.com/

Also, this site can be helpful if you want feedback about e-tailers:

I just bought a used 1D from KEH. There's another one on there in a little better condition for about $645 or so.

Actually, there are a number of 1DS available there (I assume the text is correct, not the subject line :D).

Note too that KEH includes a 14 day satisfaction guarantee and 60 day warranty except for collectibles an items marked 'as-is'. I've had to use both over the years and they do honor them.

FWIW, I've found Dan Orchard (KEH Sales Representative) to be very helpful. His direct line is (770) 333-4212, email dorchard@keh.com

    Happy hunting!/ScottGee1

What you are looking for is a Canon 1Ds MKII. I agree with the other posters about where to look and purchase.

Well, if you are posting in this forum, I would hope you are looking here. deal.gif

If you would like me to edit your title to reflect a WTB, please say so (and specify which 1D), otherwise, I'll move this thread to a discussion forum. We have a general "where to buy" thread in the Cameras forum.

    thanks thumb.gif

Thanks for helping. I had shopped in all places mentioned accept KEH. Has anyone had any luck on ebay? After a few days of consideration I think I might wait on the 1Ds. I have just started shooting pro and was looking for a new camera so I could use my 20D as a backup. I think for the money that I might come out better going with a 40D or 50D new and then sell my 20D after the summer and upgrade to a pro body. This would allow me to go ahead and upgrade with a new lens. Good idea or not? Any ideas on the 40D vs. 50D?

    Thanks,
    Wes

Lots of people have had luck on eekbay -- both good and bad! ne_nau.gif

It's important to find a reliable seller there, preferably one with a long track record who offers at least a 'check it out' guarantee period.

You'll want to think about mixing APS-C bodies with 1.3x and full frame. If you have lenses designed for the APS-C bods they really won't fully work with larger sensor cams and may not work at all. Of course, you can get all full-frame lenses and you'll be good to go.

I've wrestled with a similar decision until I got an EFs 17-55 IS lens. There isn't an equivalent lens in FF. It's so good that I've standarized on APS-C.

    YMMV/ScottGee1

To answer your question about the 40D or 50D. I have had both, right now I have the 50D and have to say for all the pixel peeking I've done with it the camera rocks.

I had a 5D which I sold to get $$$ for the 5D M2 then changed my mind at the last minute because the 5D M2 manual said it's video could not AF zoom....too bad for me.

Anyway, I bought the 50D instead for the low ISO that Canon was hyping. It is a sweet handling camera but not perfect. I have put it through all kinds of low light shooting and forgot to test it in the daylight for quality.

Last weekend I used in in a noon time photo session ( only time of day client could do it) on Saturday. http://lakewebdesign.smugmug.com/gallery/7241248_UhLBi#465288760_BhncjOn Sunday, I used to to shoot in an indoor arena with extremely difficult lighting ( I fondly call it the arena from hell). I am very pleased.

I forgot to reset the Noise Reduction from off to low on Sunday. I shot in sRaw1 and small jpeg. I was doing backflips as the image quality and noise levels on those small jpegs was so good I posted proofs without doing any postprocessing NR.http://lakewebdesign.smugmug.com/gallery/7256928_2xHWn#466616664_Wyd8g Amen!

I like most things about the 50D, the images can be a little soft but I would rather sharpen them myself then do too much in camera sharpening. The ability to shoot sRaw wand still get a 7.1 MB file which prints large at 240DPI makes it a great second choice to the 1D line. That being said, I still want a 5D M2 for the video. I will be marketing more towards weddings, portraits this year. Not sure.

My suggestions get a 50D leave off the NR, it gets great detail at 15MB full setting but the sRaw is great too, the small jpegs make great proofs.

Great information. One reason I was considering the 40 was, because of the lower cost, I could get a battery grip and a few extra batteries which I really need. I still plan on getting a 1Ds after the summer and using this as a backup.
