Photo Shop Elements is reasonably priced. PSP, etc.

    And there's always GIMP.

Do you think GIMP is ok to use and not mess with to much of the pixels / resolution?

I got Elements 6 in the fall to get started with digital darkroom work as I am new to the DSLR world. Elements is not for 'professionals' but it more than serves my needs for the forseeable future. I had an actual darkroom for many years so I am well aware of the range of possibilities on this end of the medium. One consideration for me in addition to cost was starting out with a smaller feature set that might be more manageable to get up to speed with.

    Just jump in and explore.
