Paris bound

My husband and I are visiting Paris for four days (part of a trip to UK and Belgium) and I would like to know if there are places where I can burn my CF cards to CDs/DVDs. I did this in New Zealand (when my useless laptop suddenly did not recognise my CD burner) without a problem (these places are everywhere in NZ). I have done a Google of Paris but cannot find anything which remotely addresses this. I have heard that internet cafes in Paris do not perform this service.

Cheers and thanks in anticipation

Sheila i cant help you out...but get in line early for the louve.

If you cant get any assistance then i cant recommend these things highly enough. I take mine every where & it takes all cards & is 30 gig. Charges in 30 mins from any A/C power source avail in hotel rooms or a 12 volt card charger.

Its just so handy having a portable hard drive to carry around also...the use hard drives from laptops.

    Good luck

Thanks Gus. I did think of looking at an external drive and I can see from your link that you can see what you have downloaded - is that right? I would hate to delete my masterpieces:D of Paris to find that they have not downloaded properly or worse, not at all! I shoot RAW plus small JPeg so I get through a 1 gyg card pretty fast.

Thanks for the tip on Louvre. Lonely Planet suggests you buy your tickets at department stores and go through the back door. I was somewhat surprised that Lonely Planet makes no mention of where to have CDs burned off CF cards in Paris. They did mention where to buy something called "film"rolleyes1.gif

Sheila i dont delete from mine until they are safe on my home computer on 2 sep hard drives (safe really cant be used in the same sentance as hard drives). You can see them loading on & they hold 10 000 individual files but of course of the size of the files will limit you at this number.

Get one with 60 odd gig & that will maybe hold say 6000 shots + if each RAW is 8-9 odd meg in size. You can get them with 80 gigs now i believe.

Remember that there are companys that specialise in info retrieval from crashed hard drives about & from what i hear...they have a good succes rate so whilst the thought of it crashing is a worry as with any hard drive...all may not be lost.

You can also buy portable DVD burners now that look like a walkman if that is a better option for you.

Mine is now an old model (1 year) & the newer ones are even better. Mine is slow but sucks a 1 gig CF down in 20 min exactly. So thats 100-120 odd shots & whilst it is doing this i have another 1 gig CF i pop into the camera. Its rare for me to do over 100 shots RAW in 20 mins. They turn off automatically once they have finished loading the card to save power.

The battery in mine will hold for about 3 x 1 gig cards..so that plus the 2x1 gig CF cards all full is around 500-600 shots. A nice day out. I am about to operate on it & put a new battery in myself but i know that the newer models will do twice this (im told anyway)

Have a great time & believe me...always make an attempt to spit out your worst french when ordering from a restaurant & the french waiters will automatically see you are an idiot & think they are better than you & then start talking in english to you quite civily...hey..it worked for me.rolleyes1.gif

    Have a great trip...

Thanks Gus. You have been a big help. I am practising my school girl French on a work colleague who is French. She cringes when I try to pronounce some of the French place names. Reims is not pronounced Reems but something quite unintelligible to me! Lonely Planet also suggested to try out your French, however terrible! I was quite good in French at school but how often do you need to know "Ferme la porte" - shut the door etc etc. All quite useless really.
