This HDR photo is a composition of 18 images at three levels of exposure. The stitching and HDR was done in PTGui. HDR (High Dynamic Range) was chosen because of the extreme difference in brightness from the inside to the outside of the cave.
The scene is inside one of the sea Caves at the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore in Lake Superior. The caves are accessed by walking across the ice surface in late winter and by kayak in the summer.

The first link in your OP doesn't work (icecaves vs seacaves), but I was able to get to it from your blog.
