Very Shy, How to get it better?

What can I do to make this better?
I don't like the background but he just would not leave the dirt! :D
He is very shy so seconds is all I had.

    Sometimes with kids a second is all you get! (IMHExp)

    I found the background to be a bit distracting because (I think) the fill flash was a bit strong. Also, some softening of the fill flash might help here, too.

    Being in the dirt is no problem, but how about you get into it too? I mean, like the angle was more flat and on his level and less like you were above him looking down? It depends on what you want for a background, etc., and what the background would have been had you changed the shot angle.

    Not a bad shot, though, and great use of afternoon (?) light to get a hairlight in the game!
