I just got back from borders (and the chiropractor.. my neck and back feel much better now :clap) and bought the book "Mastering Digital Wedding Photography" by James Karney

So far it looks like a decent book that will have alot of insight to help me improve my wedding photography.

Anyone else have this book? What did/do you think of it?

I might post some excerpts from the book if I find something really worth sharing on here... although that might be copyright infringing? I wont word for word post it in here, but you know what I mean?

I don't have that book yet, but always look at it. I have so many to read as it is.

I imagine you can just post what you thought was most helpful out of the book without quoting the book.

Yeah, I think thats what I'll do if I do come across something good.

Right now its talking about the business aspect of Wedding Photography, equipment that you should have to be prepared for anything, as well as advice on pricing... pretty good stuff so far. I'm only about 50 pages in, and its a 400 page book.

It also covers meeting new people and booking them, marketing your services, different techniques to use when shooting the wedding, formals, and reception, Post Production, Proofs, Prints, CD's and DVD's of the events, Albums... And alot more..

I think it's worth the $40 I paid for it.

400 pages, oh my... I remember having to read 1000 page book in school and that was sooo long ago... And now 400pages seems to much for me, especially when you have kids 2 & 4 all over you all day.. I really try to read as much as I can, mostly on the internet, it's so full of information, I don't think we will ever be done with that... ha ha

But the book does seem interesting, you will have to let us know if it's any good and helpful, if so I might just go and get it... Might take me a while to read, but that's ok....

I purchased this book a few months ago after browsing through a friend's copy. It's TOTALLY worth it. I got it at Amazon for lots off the cover price too. Easy reading, and it's segmented so it's easy to read a few pages at a time. Lots of helpful information, across all aspects of wedding photography, including lots of sociological (bad spelling, I know), like how to make people feel comfortable and loosen up with you, ettiquette... etc. Great book!

I agree! I think its pretty easy to read. I'm the type of person that falls asleep very easily when I read. But this book isn't boring. The author tells you what he does and what other people do, and it feels like you're actually listening to a photographer (which you are) instead of another author.

For any others reading this -- other wedding photography books you'd recommend too? either ones for a useful start or for refining your art?

Yes!! My newest read is "Digital Wedding Photography" by Glen Johnson. It's fantastic. It covers everything, from defining your own shooting style, to meeting with clients, covering the wedding, lighting, editing, to the finished product (discs, slideshows, etc.) Fabulous book , chalk full of inspiration, ideas and lightbulb moments! :)

Sweet! I might have to pick that up when I'm done with this book. Thanks for the suggestion!

Look around at the photographs you like. I think there's a common theme and that is the use of light. To that end, Light: Science & Magic is a great introduction. There are a variety of other books on the subject that are also worth considering--have a look in the book reviews for some more.

Yes, that is a very in depth look at lighting. I purchased that one as well to help me understand off camera studio type lighting. I'm in a fairly small town with no access to courses or classes or anything like that so I have to be self-taught, and these books mentioned so far are all great resources!

Working on mentioning more books! Hence my question here as to what other books folks found were excellent wedding guides :ivar

I've seen various on-line courses as well. Plus, if you follow strobist.blogspot.com, there are some great articles and also an offering of some lighting courses on DVD. David Hobby is good at describing his techniques--well worth following his blog postings.

I agree! I've been looking through it when I have free time, there's soooo much information on there.
