Southampton, England

The first port where we stopped on our cruise was Southampton, England. It was sunrise as we entered port. As Gubbs has said, they have smog in England. It colored the sunrise a bit, but it was still a beautiful sight.

The entry into Southampton is lined with lovely homes.

This shot was quite washed out by the bright sunrise. But I corrected it with levels and curves.

We took a trip through the countryside to visit Exbury Gardens, considered the most outstanding of it's kind in England. It has a breathtaking display of color and it was in it's peak bloom.

What great shots! My mother and her family are all from England. On my list to visit in the future.

    Thank you
Thanks Andy and Dean. Thanks for stopping by for a looksee. I just added the captions for the photos in the gallery. Sorry they were not there for you. I am still working on the hundreds of photos that I took during my two week trip. I'll have a gallery for each port eventually. Hope you can take a look at them later.

Well, being an ex-Southamptonian, I could not resist! Of course, as I left there in 1967, things have changed enormously in that time. But I don't think they have "smog" as they did in the fifties. The Clean Air Act, as I recall, changed all that.

    Cheers

Hi Sheila, glad to meet ya
Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
Well, there was only a touch of smog. It was fog that was a bit colored. :D A lovely orange haze. It was really very beautiful.

We were supposed to be at sea for 5 days and then land in our first port at Ponta Delgada, Portugal. But, the sea was stormy that morning and we could not enter the port. :cry So, we continued on to Southampton, making a total of 8 days at sea. :help

After 8 days, it was a joyous morning when we hit Southampton. And we brought the sunshine with us I guess, because they told us it was the first day of sunshine there in a week. :): It was cold, 45 degrees in the morning, but warming later. I brought my down coat and I was glad for it. We had a lovely time.

    Stormy Sea
Here's a picture of Ponta Delgada, Portugal. It is the largest island of the Azores, islands off the coast of Portugal. It was to have been our first port. We would have been taken to shore in small boats, but as you can see, it was not a good day for small boats. We stood on deck in the rain and watched the waves crashing on the rocks. I had been looking forward to taking pictures of the colorful buildings and we had planned a trip to the crater lakes, but it was not to be. We muddled through with plenty of good food and swimming in the indoor pool for 3 more days before reaching Southampton on a sunny morning.
