Columbia River Gorge (Waterfalls and stuff)

I had to spend a few days in Portland and was able to shake loose for a few hours one day in the morning and a few hours in the evening on another day.

I left my 77mm polarizer on a lens I didn't bring with me :dgrin

Anyway, here are some of my favorites from the brief trip.

#1: Columbia River Gorge sunrise

#2: Sunrise as seen from Crown Point looking north across the Columbia River to Washington State

472180942_YqkoB-L.jpg

#3: Vista House at Crown Point

472182555_aX5fU-L.jpg

#4: Punch Bowl Falls (this shot would have been better with a polarizer and about 2 hours earlier (but I would have missed the sunrise), but this was my first time here so I didn't know that the light would turn to crap so early in the day, also, I picked the one sunny day in winter in Portland which didn't help. I'll be back in better conditions in the future. Incidentally, I had to go barefoot in the 30 degree water to take this shot :D).

472185747_MDYGc-L.jpg

#5: Punch Bowl Falls wide angle (this time with a polarizer, feet still freezing)

472187045_xufXs-L.jpg

#6:

472188647_DbytQ-L.jpg

#7: Lower Punch Bowl Falls (very slick and icy)

472191898_GAygY-L.jpg

#8: Multnomah Falls

472197277_tXBeY-L.jpg

#9: Wahkeena Creek. This is my favorite composition of all the water shots.

472199763_tGBPY-L.jpg

#10: Latourell Falls

472195488_8AtEa-L.jpg

#11: Columbia River Gorge sunset

And now, the obligatory video section. These are all raw and unprocessed, but I thought they might be interesting and give some idea of how fast this water is moving. They're all horizontal orientation because I'm too stupid to figure out how to rotate the video to vertical orientation.

Video #1: Poor Man's Photoshop :lol3 The result of this "activity" was shot #9. You have to wait awhile before the fun starts.

Great series Ron. That is a huge item this year in the mind of Punch Bowl Photogs. The log that ran diagonal across the whole falls is gone. These are some of the first pictures of Punch Bowl unobstructed view. Very nice. If you can ever capture Punch Bowl after a snow fall it is incredible

Must be nice to have a helper change the surroundings for you as in the video very cool.

Fantastic series. The Multnomah Falls are huge when I can see the people on the bridge in the video. I'm so impressed that you braved the freezing water to get your shots. I also like your version of poor man's Photoshop.

I especially love #5 Ron, and the fact that you got in the water to get this shot makes it even better clap.gif

Cool videos. Were those taken with your dslr?

    PS. #9 rocks as well.

Love 5 and 6 from these. I think 6 slightly edges 5 out though if I had to pick. The rocks are a bit better and I like the sun streams more than the falls it leaves a bit more to the imagination, nice and mysterious"whats around the bend sorta thing"

Nice series. Ironically, on Tuesday my day job sent me out to shoot some iconic snow photos. I raced out to the gorge where they had been predicting one to three inches of snow. Nothing. So I zipped up to Corbett and Vista House and there wasn't much there either. But I didn't have to wade through chilly water! Brrrrrrr! :D

Beautiful! I love the shot of the sun ray peeking out from the river canyon thumb.gif

There's a way to rotate video, depending on what video editor you use. I know even in simple iMovie you can do it.

I heard about that, and can indeed confirm the stupid log is gone! Now I just need to go out there on an overcast morning just after dawn, or later in the day just before sunset. My helper also has a habit of dropping the GND filters in the river, I think I'll fire him one of these days.

Thanks Cuong, sometimes it's easier to do the cloning in real life and not in post processing :D I need to get some river sandals, the cold wasn't as huge of a deal, but it was very slick and I was nervous that me and my camera would end up completely wet.

Thanks Dan, yes, those videos were taken with the Canon 5D MII. I don't know anything about post processing videos and usually just take them for the novelty of it, more than any artistic reasons.

You and just about every other wind surfer :D I can see why, there's so much wind through the gorge it's ridiculous. Those sunrise shots I nearly froze my hands off and had to hold my tripod with my hand so that it wouldn't also take a dip in the Columbia. I could barely open my car door.

Thanks! I knew the waterfall would be overexposed so I shifted over to the left to get it out of the picture because even without the waterfall it was still a very cool spot (literally too).

Heh. It was just starting to snow as I left on Monday night, but nothing serious. I would have thought over the last few months you would have acquired enough "iconic snow photos" around Portland to last several years :D

Thanks! I looked around briefly and couldn't find anything free for Windows that could do it (I would use a Mac if I could, my laptop is a MBP, but the equivalent Mac desktop would have cost at least $2,500 more, and I don't want to install a bootleg version of OS X on this thing). Probably my lack of google-fu more than anything.

Sweet, send me a PM when you're around as I'm always up for some more waterfall shots, especially for Punch Bowl Falls (that was my first time there and it was a little too bright and sunny). I can also show you around to some of the other falls, there's a ton of them in that area.

Awesome!! I will be in the area from March 7th to the 14th but haven't figured which days in what area. A few in Seattle area and a few in Portland area. I'll PM you as soon as I get a plan together.
