Meet your county science fair winner
My daughter, Stefanie, won best of fair for the county science fair tonight! A very proud moment for all of us.
The four students chosen from her school to go to the county fair really cleaned up. Each won first place in their category and were selected to represent our county in the Florida State Science Fair next month.
Proud grandparents (my folks) were in attendance.
With her presentation board and some of the hardware.

Last year her project involved soaking elk teeth in different beverages and measuring the weight loss after 2 weeks. This was a simple project that was a pretty good model for tooth decay.
This year she used last year's data as a control group. She then took elk teeth and coated them with a dental sealant. Many of us parents know that dentists are now applying these expensive sealants in an effort to prevent decay. She then soaked the teeth in the same beverages for 2 weeks.
Remarkably, the dental sealants offered a significant protective effect against bone loss. As a side benefit, the sealed teeth had much less staining from the beverages like Gatorade and Coffee.
Good idea + well controlled study design + hardworking student = science fair winner!

PS - Now I know that when they want to put that stuff on my granddaughter's teeth, it really works.

Thanks, Scott. The photos really are an afterthought with this story! I had to share, but couldn't really post on this site without photos!
