Question Regarding Share / Links

Hi

loving smugug, customized my site and have some galleries that are public. I've got them right click proteced and max size is Xlarge.

Now, when I put the share button on, it enables links which if are then copied into a new IE web url, it displays the images which then can be right clicked.

I would love the share button to work so people can email it, but not use links becuase of the loop I just mentioned.

Also - if I password a gallary, nobody can get in without a password, no matter which way they stumble accross the gallary / link - is that correct?

cheers
Rob.

P.s. thanks to everybody for all the help in the forums on customizing!

    Hey Rob,
So once you start wanting to protect your images I'm not a big fan of the share button. Since it gives out a link directly to the photo it doesn't use your galleries protections as you found out. Plus most people are comfortable with just grabbing the link at the top of the page and emailing that out. A workaround for this is the watermarking if you have a Pro level account. It will still show those on the shared links.

As for the password, yes if you put it on there then nobody can get in without it.

OK - is there a way to add a "Share Slideshow" button in smugmug. I don't want to add the share button because of the other links it gives out, but I would love just to share the slideshow?

You can get the link to send out by copy and paste. Just turn on the share
button when logged in and hide it for visitors.

Turn sharing on and add this to your CSS.

    .notLoggedIn #shareButton {display: none;}

Hi and thanks for the reply. However, I'd like to show a "Share Slideshow" button (or "Share This" gallery button) so others can use it. Will smugmug be customizing the share button in the future?

Say what?!? I didn't know this would happen. Darn, I really wanted to let people share my images in a variety of ways. I've restricted the size people can see in my galleries. It hadn't occurred to me that they'd be able to simple embed the original into another site, then snag it.

Or has this been addressed since this post?

Any image that you put anywhere out there on the net, off and away from your SmugMug site, can be copied. Right Click protection is just a mild deterrent anyhow. Use a strong watermark and block the big sizes if you are concerned. http://news.smugmug.com/2008/07/04/right-click-protection-and-image-security/

So if I restrict the size people can view in my galleries, the sizes they can link to are also restricted to the same size? I had done that, but thought this post let people link to my original files.

Yes, if you restrict in gallery, they can't link a bigger photo.
