New Pocket Wizard products announced... Hello 1/8000 sync
    MiniTT1 http://www.pocketwizard.com/products/transmitter_receiver/minitt1%20canon/

    Flex5 http://www.pocketwizard.com/products/transmitter_receiver/flextt5%20canon/

....Use the MiniTT1 for standard triggering with any PocketWizard Receiver including the FlexTT5, PlusII or MultiMAX. When used this way with a digital camera, you can take advantage of PocketWizard’s HyperSync Technology that allows up to 1/500th of a second camera sync with many camera/strobe set-ups. HyperSync allows you to advance the timing of your flash trigger so that faster then X-sync speeds can be achieved.
Need more speed? Push your ControlTL system beyond 1/500th and go into FP/High-Speed sync mode automatically. No buttons to press or settings to change other then your shutter speed will give you flash sync all the way to 1/8000th.....

I'm glad I waited on buying the additional PW that I needed..wings.gif

Wow thanks for that post tisun. That looks to be the first pocketwizard that supports the way I like to shoot. (which is that the camera is smarter than the dummy attached)

Question: we shoot inside - in dusty, relatively dark indoor arenas. Biggest issue - duh - is LIGHT (or lack thereof). We DO use flash - but Canon's sync speed is 1/200 or 1/250, which is a bit lacking for action - and setting remotes around the arena really isn't feasible.

These new PW gizmos say they sync at 1/500....and they lock on the camera hotshoe. So....if I attached it to the hotshoe, then attached a cable to the PW gizmo to use the flash off camera (on a hand-bracket), it would sync at 1/500???

    Say it's so... please????

Carol, read the Rob Galbraith article linked above. (page 2 onwards...where it talks about Hypersync). It will answer your question, which is not an immediate yes.

Which sucks because it shows the 5D II only hitting about 1/250 before the sync problem.

That's OK though, I have a 30D and I like the small profile of the new mini transmitter.
On a scale of 1 to 10, my awesomeness goes all the way to 11.

I keep my 50D, too, and I like the low profile, lack of anntenna (been hitting mine too many times) and the fact it has a hot-shoe-through design. Simplest application can be adding speedlight in manual mode to the studio setup for the catchlight purposes. I also like the idea it has a very distinct shape, so I'd immediately know which device goes on camera and which ones go to my lights. I think the convenience along justifies the extra Jackson or two, after all it's a one time deal....

I think when I do buy PocketWizards I'm definitely gonna get the mini and then the Plus II's, i dont like the fact that you would have this big box with an antenna sticking out of it on top of my camera. Doesn't it get in the way and annoying? I guess people don't mind because they're so amazingly sweet.

Anybody actually get a set of these yet? I have 2 of the flexTT5's on order from Adorama. This is like the holy grail for me. Shame I can't get a little more extra sync speed for the 5d, but I have a 40 D that should work up to 1/400th and that is cool to say nothing of the ability to use these is sunlight. Very excited about these!!!

    mini: yes; flex: no.
I don't shoot xTTL with big lights, hence no need for anything more complicated that basic PW units (which I have).

I've got 1 mini and 3 flex's. I use them with 550ex flashes and avoid all of the interference. They work as advertised. HSS works great and the newer firmware is pretty trick and pulls things off that the Canon's system can't do. All that being said, I still prefer good old manual flash sometimes to Canon's ETTL, but maybe thats just because I haven't practiced enough with it.

Yeah... I currently use a couple of 580 EXII's and an St-E2 and it is far from perfect, but certainly within the limits of raw processing so I am expecting similar results with these. I have had terrible reliability outdoors with the IR system and this should be my easy fix. love the idea of shooting at 1/400 with full power flash... that is huge. Good excuse for me to save clicks on the 5d and use the 40d more too. Have you tested the sync speeds? Have you tested distance with your 550's? I know the 580's are suposed to have limited distance because of RF interferience so that may be a reason for me to start looking for a 550 or a 480.

    Matt,

I had a 580ex and had horrible range issues, maybe 35 feet usable at best. I tested out the 550ex and got to about 300 feet before I stopped caring (ETTL at that range is destructive) but I am sure it would have gone much farther. I haven't had any miss fires either. On my 1dII I can get it up to 1/500 at full power. On my 5D I haven't pushed it past 1/250th (I'd rather grab my 1dII if sync speed is the issue).

I will have to think about that a bit... I like a lot of juice on my off camera light when I shoot a/b for large groups indoors, but outdoor, where this is my little dream toy, it doesn't matter so much. Neither does the 35 ft. most likely though. Either way I bet someone comes up with a hack to fix that... I read that the euro versions use a different frequency range and it isn't affected, and these can learn new frequency codes so maybe there will be a hack to teach it the euro codes... darn FCC! may also be some way to shield the 580... oh well, nothing is perfect!

    Thanks for the info!
