My trip to Southeast Asia - 2008/2009 - Part 1 (LARGE post)
Hello Everyone,
I just came back from a trip to Southeast Asia. This was my 5th time travelling in the region, but the first for my wife, Aggie. We started in Singapore, went through Malaysia to Thailand, and flew to/from Myanmar. Afterwards we went to Cambodia, Laos, Malaysian Borneo (Sarawak state), then north Luzon in the Philippines before going back to Singapore and back home. This took us 8 weeks.
Here is a rough outline of our trip:
I've taken thousands of photos on this trip, I've started going through them and will be posting them in country-specific pages/posts. For now here is an overview of what's to come. I hope you enjoy them
Part 1
Singapore
Everytime I'm jetlagged in Singapore, I make it a point to go to the Botanical Garden. It's become a tradition for me now
I always go to the excellent Asian Civilizations Museum, there is always a new special exhibition
Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, dedicated to the goddess Kali. Built by Indian laborers in 1881 in Little India
Buddha's Tooth Temple, Chinatown
Malaysia
Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, Melaka. Built in 1646 and dedicated to Guanyin, the Chinese goddess of mercy, this is Malaysia's oldest Chinese temple.
Stadhuys, Governors House, Melaka. The metal crocodiles and turtles were used as currency.
Bicycle rikshaw driver taking a nap, Melaka
Bicycle, Melaka
Capitan Keling Mosque, Penang. It was built by Penang's first Indian Muslim settlers, the East India Company Troops
Rickshaw driver taking a break to watch a Hanuman Cartoon, Little India, Penang
Mudskipper marking his territory at low tide, Penang Harbor.
Colonial architecture, Penang
Shopgirl, Penang
Thailand
Phuket
Ko-Samui
Phra Khru Samathakittikhun, Ko-Samui. Famous local monk, he died in 1973 and has been in this position ever since. Many people from the island come and pray in front of him.
Same temple, live monk
Khao San Road, the #1 backpacker ghetto in the world, Bangkok. Locals refer to the tourists here as "white chickenshits"
Wat Pho temple, home to Thailand's largest reclining Buddha
Local food market, Bangkok
I hope you enjoyed these photos, part 2 is coming soon.
