Around The World Issues

Hello,

What a great idea to have a map of the world on the home page for navigation! I have a custom domain and two galleries that are geo-tagged. They both show correctly on Map This. I added Around The World to my home page and found a few issues.

1. One album sticky shows up immediately when I bring my home page while the other one takes more than 5 seconds to show

2. When I click on the slow one I see the correct map but with now stickies on it and the photos on the right are from the other album

3. When I click on the other album I only get a partial map and only a few photos on the right.

Is there anything I can do to solve these issues?

Thank you very much

Since I switched to the custom domain I lost my cute SmugMug favicon in the address bar of the browser :-(

    Hi Orange,

    1. What is happening is that because you have just about every photo geotagged in the first photo, the system is dropping those pins first. You cannot see it happen as each pin is almost right on top of the one before it. I see about 75 photos in that category so it takes a few seconds to drop them all. Once the ones in Malta are dropped, it moves to the Caribbean.

    2. Make sure all photos that are mapped have captions. That will cause this behavior. Even a simple period in the caption field will cause them to map.

    3. Same as above. You have some captioned but I think I see a few that are not.

Keep in mind that only 150 images will map. So if you have 150 in one gallery, that may be the only one that will appear. If photos are taken in roughly the exact same spot, I try to only geotag one to prevent eating up the map pins. Just an FYI.

First, it seems that the 150 limit is currently not being honored

Secondly, I think, over time you may want to improve the algorithm a bit. I now geotag all of my images at source (i.e. in my library) - simply because I have a dedicated GPS logger which I carry around. It won't be long before most cameras would have in-built GPS so that they are geotagged right out of camera. In this scenario, if I go out, take 150 pictures and upload to a gallery, the widget name "Around the World" won't make any sense. The latest 150 images will override all the other places I have been to

    Thank you, docwalker

I assumed that Around The World would have a single pin per gallery :-) On a second thought - maybe this is not such a bad idea. This is how a casual viewer may also think. What do you think? I guess I assumed that this widget is an extension of "Map This" feature.

Would it make sense to add Gallery geo-tag feature where we could optionally assign coordinates for the gallery as a whole. This would really speed up the display of the widget. When a user would click on a gallery pin you would simply display "Map This".

I know that some galleries may contain photos from many locations. For some reason I thought that mostly travel galleries would benefit from a widget like this. Most travel galleries (not all, I know) would be localized. Even if some are long range cruises or driving holidays one may still assign a meaningful geo-tag to them. Or maybe even split them into several local ones. Alternatively would it make sense to have two maps - one that pins galleries and one that pins photos?

    Thank you again
