Want to buy a Canon XTI

Hello everybody,
I am from Germany and want to buy a digital slr here in US since they are a lot cheaper here :wink. I decided I want to go for the Canon XTI, since it is not much more expensive than the XT and the bigger lcd sounds good.

I found this offer:
http://cgi.ebay.com/CANON-REBEL-XT-EOS-350D-S-D-SLR-CAMERA-LENS-6-B-8GB-CF_W0QQitemZ190287763877QQcmdZViewItemQQptZDigital_Cameras?hash=item190287763877&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72:1199|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1308|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50

(If the link does not work, 190287763877 is the ebay item number)
Is that price of $390 okay?

Another offer I found is a complete bundle:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Canon-Rebel-XTi-400D-Digital-SLR-Camera-Body-4-lens-kit_W0QQitemZ280310782488QQcmdZViewItemQQptZDigital_Cameras?hash=item280310782488&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66:2|65%3A15|39%3A1|240%3A1309

Is the above bundle worth its price, or are the objectives just cheap stuff that is no better than the original kit objective?

I am uncertain... maybe I should better first go for the kit, and then see what objectives I exactly need... what do you think?

Thanks for your answers. After work I will go in a shop to see some of the SLRs :barb

Btw, so far I have been using a Fujifilm with 7 MP... its a nice camera, but somehow I have grown out of it and want to make even better pictures. I guess the XTI is a good start.

    Welcome to DGrin!!

First, you should look to see how these sellers rate outside of ebay. I could find no ratings for either of these on Reseller Ratings, which is unusual. I am not sure I would trust them with my $500. I always recommend going with a reputable camera vendor, such as B&H. B&H no longer has the XTi, but has the XSi for $649.

Now, as for that 'kit' provided by the second vendor: I say do not buy this. The Canon lens is an older cheap film kit lens, the Tamron is a basic zoom, and the other two lenses are useless. Save your money for a better lens, or buy the Canon with the real kit lens, the 18-55IS.

    Scoox,

CMason is giving good advice. I don't recommend EBay for major purchases except from a very few that also have a normal internet presence.

    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/
    http://www.adorama.com/
    http://www.calumetphoto.com
    http://www.tallyns.com

... are all good vendors and Amazon.com is another source to consider.

If you want to look for a used camera from a reputable dealer I recommend http://www.keh.com.

If you will be returning to Germany soon do consider that you may have to pay duty taxes to bring a new camera back into the country.

    Hey guys,
wow that were fast answers - gracias thumb.gif

I already expected that the "kit" probably isnt a good deal... thank you for explaining me why :D.

I also shifted my decision about the model... I guess an A100 is the better choice for me, since it comes with a built-in anti-shake system which will probably suite me better since I do not really have the money to pay for high-end objectives, but still want to make good photos.

I found it incl. lens, charger, battery, etc. at "Wolf Camera Clearance Center" for apprx. $400 incl. tax & shipping... they have good reviews on the net, and do have actual stores - so its not a scam. I also so far always had great experience with Ebay sales. Hope this one does not change that - if so I can still void the credit card payment and return the cam.

I am excited to hold the camera in hands clap.gif . Always wanted a SLR .-).

@ziggy, you are right, they charge you 19% and up when returning the cam to Germany. But up to Eur 450 (apprx. $600) is toll free - and I have my girlfriend coming over to visit my in April, I hope she does not plan on big shopping and will just give her the camera for return to Germany iloveyou.gif

Thanks again guys, I am sure I will be active in this forum :D

Oh, and I forgot: Can you recommend a book on the A100? I really want to be able to use the camera very good and have a friend back in Germany who can sure give me some advice, but I do not want to bog him or the forum with newbie questions ;-)

Not sure I can recommend Wolf Camera either:

I actually find the Wolf Camera ratings odd. Granted, I don't think much of Wolf Camera as a store, but they are a very large chain of stores, and at least have enough of a reputation to support themselves in nearly every shopping mall in the USA. Now, much of that may be processing film from all those disposable cameras, but in any case, if they had that BAD a reputation and service, I would fully expect to see them out of business.

At the very least if you order from Wolf, you can go into the store and have a human to yell at!

I have no experience in ordering from their webstore, and in fact, those warnings might be accurate for their webstore.

Note that you can get the newer A200 from Adorama with the Sony kit lens for $499. Link.

    Hey guys,
thanks again for the swift responses. I will check out the threads.

Well, I hope they will service me well. If not I can still cancel the visa payment.

The A200 might have been an option, but I already bought the A100 deal.gif . I guess I will be fine with it though, since I do photography for Internet use mostly - I guess I would be fine with almost any model with 6 mp or more. And therefore on the upside I save about $100 with the A100 as opposed to the A200 and can use them one my first lens .-)

    Gracias amigos

Edit: Puh, I am relieved... the dealer let me buy the non-kit verison of the cam for $280 instead of the kit for 370... I am really glad, now I can buy a good lense :). See my other thread.
