Hello all,

We have been asked to provide an e-file of photos to an attorney to show his partners in consideration for some new artwork. Yipee!

But here is the rub, this group is VERRRRY busy and I am sure they do not want to navigate to our site to review a gallery of options, just a file that they can open from email and look through quickly. Issues about selection, size etc will be later (hopefully)

Soooo--how do I do this? I would like the file to open separately and be able to show good quality images. This group is very high end and their main space is like walking into an art museum. I want make a good impression.

I am such a "learn as I go tech idiot" and don't want to mess this up.

Any suggestions--PLEASE!--on how to put this together?

How would clicking a link in your email, that directs them to a specified gallery on your SM site, any more complicated or time consuming than opening any other sort of file?

I agree, and will be putting a link to a special gallery in the email, but the principal of the firm specifically asked just for an e-file. I am assuming he wants it to be somewhat portable..don't know. He is doing us a BIG favor and I want to give him what he wants...

But I do know that gaining and keeping any of their attention for long is a major feat. If for some reason I only do a link and there is any delay w/the gallery or our website we are doomed.

I was initially thinking about loading the images in a PowerPoint....???headscratch.gif

powerpoint is certainly one way to do it.

gathering the images in a document and sending it as a PDF file is another but I wonder about the size of those files and whether it will make it through most servers if it's too big.

but back to square one, if this were my contact, I would be saying something to the effect; "Look, I'm a photographer not an IT man, can you be tell me what you mean or expect by eFile?"

How many photos are you planning to send, and at what size? Email systems often have a maximum file size allowed. It is also entirely possible that large attachments will be blocked by the email system.

I think your smugmug site is a much better display forum for your photos. If nothing else, it offers some protection for you. You sound like you're intent on sending high quality images via email. You do realize that the image is out of your control at that point, don't you?

I just noticed that you are making your originals available in your galleries too. I highly recommend that you set X3Large as the largest display size, not Original. The original is still used for printing. As you have your photos now, they can be easily stolen from your site. Yes, I know, you have right-click protection turned on. But you should be aware that right-click protection is merely a deterrent. If the image is displayed on a computer, it is sitting on that computer, ripe for the taking.

I here you but unfortunately it really isn't an option to ask him to specify exatly what he wants. As I said earlier he is doing us a big favor just by taking our photos to his partners. The document size is a concern of mine....

    any other suggestions??

First all let me say thanks to all that are chipping in their advice--believe me I NEED it and appreciate it.

The file size is an issues as I know and have experienced blocked files before. You have all outlined very well my predicament and hence why I was turning to the every creative dgrinners for advice and suggestions.

I really appreciate your taking a look at our site and commenting on the file size I had chosen. When I first started I had taken a look around dgrin and the tutorials and I guess because I never found a definitive suggestion I chose the Original option--again I understand very little of the digital lingo and resulting repercussions....

Would it be advisable that once I put together my sample gallery to have the advise of this or another forum?

    Thanks again so much--

I think you are on the best forum to discuss this issue.
Sinceyour email is not an unlimited accountyou need to advise this attorney that he can see your files at your webgallery.....from where he can also purchase all the wall candy he would like (one stop shopping if you will.....also remembering that if he goes ANY where else he has to go to a gallery, they are not going to load a truck of art to bring and show him.....yes he is doing you a favor.....however he is also trying to take advantage of you I am affraid) or 2 you can email him very small files that he can then forward on the partners.....advise him these would be no larger than 4x6inches at 72dpi because of size restraints on email.

I think they would jump at thechance to go to your gallery and pick what they want and have it delivered to them in a week or 2 and not ahve to hassel with writing down photo titles or numbers...etc.....etc .etc....etc....

one other way....to make a CD of all the oferings and a link on the CD so they can order thru your SmugMug....................

It would be just sooooooo muuuuch more professional for them to go to your website and shop thru your offerings.

another way is too get a trial version of WINZIP and zip the buggers and email that file......hoping the attorneys have WINZIP to unzip the pics too look at.

Why not do a hyperlinked document. This might be a little above your level, but if you have Acrobat or Word other creators it is relatively easy. Create 1024 x 768 images or whatever size you think is appropriate, then place them into the document. Give each one a name/caption and under the caption place the text, click here for a higher resolution view on the web. Then using a SmugMug link place a link to that photo in the lightbox view; the link can be gathered by using the share button on the image.

Send them the file and they can then review as they see fit.

    Hope that helps.

For disclaimer purposes, I'm still kind'uv a hammer and tong guy so beware! However, I participate in a couple of social groups where sometimes it is necessary to send a bunch of shots all at once. Now, I use Windows, in particular Outlook Express, and it allows me the ability to send many photos where they will be visible *in* the email in a scroll-down fashion...NOT hi-res, because the software burns 'em down before sending, but they are fine for monitor viewing nonetheless. Here's the trick, find the photos you want to send and select them...there will be a menu on the left that will give one of the options as "send in email." Select that option and you'll be asked if you want to make the images smaller (I usually say "yes" to this but you don't have to...depending on how much your ISP will allow, and of course your sendee's too)...after this box is out of the way you'll have a "normal" email page come up with lots of small print dealing with the images...I usually delete everything in the message box, type in a new title, and compose my message. Send.

One thing, you cannot (at least I haven't discovered how, yet) reverse this process without creating alot of unecessary hoops...get your pix *first* and modify the email box after that!

What will these guys be viewing the photos on? I will actually assume he wants an E-file like this so he can take a quick peek at them on his blackberry while on the move.

With this assumption I would create a .PDF file with extremely small, thumbnail size, images that will be quick to download and easy to store and view on a portable E-mail device like a blackberry. Of course if he looks at on a desktop and a full size screen they will look like crap, or at least be very small on the monitor. That is why I would make it simple to simply click on the photo to go to my gallery page with that photo on it.

of course this works best if the initial assumption is correct.

Hi. I'm new here on this site but thought I would give some advice. One way that you can up your level of service is to put the image(s) on a thumbdrive, (a 1gb will do) and drop it by there office. With the prices of thumbdrives really low, you could give them the thumbdrive with the images on it as a complimentary gift. That way after they view your images, they can use the thumbdrive. Brand the thumbdrive with your company logo if you have one...that way each time they use it, they will remember you for future jobs. If you say that this group is very high end, they will appreciate the extra effort and it does look professional.

    Good luck to you...

This might be to simple, but you could simply attach the jpgs to the email?

They dont need to be full res, especially if you want to protect your copyright. so if you upload 600x800 images, you dont need to worry about getting close to an email size limit for servers.
