I need some idea for a lighting assignment

Can anyone help? I like doing things a bit out of the box. The assignment is for a photo club and I would rather not take anything than to take something that isn't somethinng I like.
The assignment is to experiment with different types of lighting and all I seem to be thinking of is just the same old stuff everyone will have. I am aloso not great with people, except maybe kids, they are easy.
First of all, I have a simple camera, but it does it's job for me if I play around enough. Second, I don't have all the extra's that I would like or the money to get them.
This is the only thing I have so far. I walked in on my son playing his DS in the dark and said Don't Move!. He groaned but let me take it. I like it, but need to reshoot to get him in focus and work on the area around him to get it blacked out. What do you think? Any other cool ideas out there?
