I returned from the Summit Expression Seassion a week ago. I finally finished all the images. 6 out of 7 days were overcast, so I didn't have a lot of good opportunities.

4.overcast skies result in low contrast and difficult focusing. I got a few keepers though.

    Hey Sean,

Love the angles on these. I am trying my hand at ski racing photos so I see very similar conditions. If you don't mind sharing, what lens where you using and what is typical EXIF data for these shots?

5 is shot with a D700, the others the D300. I use a 70-200 f2.8 lens at f4 and iso 200. I typicaly shoot in aperture priority, but will shoot manual on sunny days. I push my exposure between .7 and 1.7 ev looking to get some of the snow blown. I shoot in raw so I can adjust exposure if needed. I find I never get my WB where I want it, so shooting raw is pretty much required. A polarizer is a good idea on sunny days. You can check out some of this years race shots here:

For the race I did shoot the D700, but was able to get a bit closer to the action as it's more predictable.

The goggles really make that shot. I wish there was a bit more trees and blue sky visible though.

Hi Sean - thanks for the info. I did check out your other shots earlier. Some really good stuff you have there. You do a really good job of positioning yourself to get a great angle on your shots

I've been shooting manual and have been afraid to push the exposure to where I'm blowing the snow. I typically end up just a bit short but have found the shots that are pushed to being blown and then have the highlights recovered in LR work out well.

How much cropping, if any, do you typically do on these types of shots?

I don't think there's any cropping on #1. All the others are cropped some. I think 5 was probably the biggest crop due to the lack of reach. 5 is probably down to a 5 Mpixels.

Whoops, I misspoke when I said my fav was #1. It was scrollFail on my part, because I hadn't scrolled back to the top.

#3 is actually my fav because with #1 it's hard to tell if the guy is falling (I would have thought he was losing it), whereas with #3 he looks like a great snowboarder with great form.
