Where/how do you store your gear?

So I had to give up my "office" and turn it in to a kid's room. Not complaining by any means, but now I don't know where to store all my gear. I moved my laptop to my kitchen counter, and all my gear (camera, flash, lenses, etc.) just sits on another counter in my kitchen (far away from appliances and the sink). I don't really like having my gear out and exposed, but I like having it close by in case my kids do something picture-worthy.

So... where do you keep your gear at home? Cabinet? Desk? Camera Case? Closet?

I have much the same problem right now, but what I'm going to do is probably utilize some of the empty cabinets in a square bookshelf. I'll only use baskets/boxes for bigger stuff (flash brackets, difussers, weird shaped things) otherwise just have one cubby for primes and one for telephotos and another for bodies :)

    something like this:

Except mine is 3 square by 3 squares and fits along the living room wall quite nicely. I believe I can get a 'door' element as well to close them off from dust if needed.

My gear stays loaded in its case and backpack or waist belt system.....depending on what I am carrying most and there it stays until I need it in a different case.........When I get my pelican styled case ( I say Pelican styled due to the fact I may buy storm or some other brand rated to be as good as pelican only lesser expensive) then all gear will reside in the hard case until it is needed in backpack or waist pack system......
