"Last Updated" date at Category level doesn't reflect sub-cat updates.

I organize my site using a Category/Sub-Category/Galleries structure, e.g. Family/Birthdays/"Uncle John's 80th" .
The "Updated" date displayed at the Category level on the homepage visually implies that the category itself was last updated on the date shown. That's not what actually happens.
The "Updated" date on my homepage for the Category ("Family", for example) doesn't change, even with the addition of a new gallery ("Aunt Sally's 75th", let's say) unless two conditions at the Sub-Category level ("Birthdays" in this example) are met:
Condition 1) The Sub-Cat ("Birthday's) must be in the #1 (upper-left) position in the arrangement under the Category level ("Family").
Condition 2) The newly added gallery ("Aunt Sally's 75th") must also be in the #1 position in the arrangement under the Sub-Cat level ("Birthdays").
So it's clear that the "Updated" date at the Category level corresponds with the gallery that happens to be in the #1 arrangement position at both the Sub-Cat level AND the #1 Gallery arrangement position within the Sub-cat level.
Bummer :cry .

Is there a way to accomplish this? I assume a CSS customization may be the only option currently, but I have no clue how to go about doing that.

- Category Level should, in my opinion, reflect the most-recent update to any Sub-cat beneath it!...
- And at the Sub-cat level, the Update date should reflect the most-recent addition of any gallery beneath it!...

Bump.
Perhaps this belongs in the Customization Thread. If so, feel free to move it.
For now, there's nothing that could be done about it apart from setting your homepage to 'most recent'. Sorry.
