Anyone here do pet photography? I'd love to hear and see some other-than-wild-life animal lovers, though I would deffinitly consider my jack russells "wild". :rofl

does stalking my cats count??
I'd love to get into it more professionally, but there's not that huge of a market -- or rather it's very niche and difficult to get into from what I've see.

It's funny, I have some friends and family BEGGING me to photograph their pets, and then I have other people saying stuff like "I bet you're one of those people who frames pictures of you pets, huh?". Uh, yes, yes I am.

There's obviously Pet People in the world and then there are ..... not.
The local PetSmart store sometimes has a photographer on hand. I never really payed much attention though because I like to do my own photos of my Corgi buddies. Seems like pet photography would appeal mostly to either the "forumla shoot" crowd ala Wal-Mart or people with plenty of disposable income and pets that are more than just pets to them. I would think the economic level of your area would play a huge factor with the upscale areas being more fertile ground.
In my studio...in the window
These are all in my studio and the first was printed at 20x30 and sold. Max was let loose and I was able to get a beautiful series our of these. I have a collage of Max too that my clients love.
This #2 is my dog Gizmo, who runs when he sees my lenses. Every night he goes up the stairs to wait for us. I'd not have gotten this but I was shooting some flowers with a macro lens in the kitchen. I tried for years to get this - it's him and it's totally lifestyle. It's in the window of my studio and has caused me to get two walk in clients this week alone.
This is Daisy, my Cairn Terrier. I have this image, printed on fine art paper in the window of the studio also. I got the commission to do Max because of this image - printed 24 x 30 on canvas and framed a bit differently. Shot with the 50 1.2 Canon lens in ambient light.
I believe if you did a search on SM for pets you would see a lot. I have a pet section on my site, www.bsvirginian.smugmug.com. Occasionally we see pets on this forum but evidently not enough to have its own section.

We(my wife and I) belong to a retriever club while training our own dog.The last couple of seasons we have found that alot of people involved want pictures of thier dogs in action. We are at the events anyway and playing with our cameras. At first we just burned discs for anybody that asked. After awhile that got to be too much. That is why we just set up this site here on SmugMug to try out for this summers training season. If you go to just about any dog event, show, agility, dock dogs, hunt tests, field trials, obedience competitions, etc.,You will find an audience interested in photos of thier pooch.
Oh,I forgot to introduce myself. This is my first post here at Digital Grin.Hi,I'm GoodDawgs.
There's definitely a huge market for pet photography. I think you just have to pursue it---like others said, PetSmart, vets, places like that. And I know during the holidays here, pet pictures with Santa are hugely popular.
My sister had a clause in her wedding photographer's contract that said he would work with her dog. Her most beautiful pictures are the ones in her wedding gown with her bouquet, with her beautiful chow chow (now deceased) next to her.
Good luck breaking into the business!
Please ignore my opinions! And if I ask for constructive criticism, please give it to me. I have really thick skin! :huh
I have a real passion for pet photography. I work full time but I would love to pursue pet photography as a side venture. I am planning on gradually doing it more. Below is a link to a slide show of some of my favorites of my two dogs, Minnie and Jack.
I recently read a good book on pet photography called Phodoggraphy. You should be able to get it at your local book store. Good luck to you! Let me know if you have any questions.
There is this famous Internet thread where a pro shooter found a kitten and adopted it, then took all these amazing pics of "Barley." here they are.
As for pics that I have taken, this is my favorite. It was my foster kitten Fritz and this pic is in the Cute Overload 2009 calendar. If you are an animal lover you should bookmark www.cuteoverload.com

Coming from a working dog family (labs and brittany's) I totally loved looking through your photos. I would LOVE to shoot at an event like that.
I called around to the local horse shows (what I'd REALLY love to get into) and was told they all have photographers, and I have a feeling that if I showd up and pulled out my camera and my big lens I'd get kicked off the grounds. I was told the "pros don't want any competition", in exactly those words. I can totally understand, but how do I get in even as a second, or just for the fun of it. I don't want to sell anything, but the minute you have a zoom lens you're looked at like you're the competition. I just want to play with my camera!
I was checking my micro-adjustments on the yashica 50/1.7 m/f adapter while my wife was trying on Dudleys, our new Welsh Terrier puppy, coat. It was just a snap, but I liked it so much that I kept it even with the feet missing.

Stilltime, Go to the AKC(American Kennel Club) or UKC(United Kennel Club) website. At each site look at "events".You can find events to go to in your area.I know with the hunt tests, you will want to ask the judges or hunt marshals where it is OK to set up so you don't distract the dogs and handlers.I would do the same at other type events. We usually just bring along business cards and stick a sign on our truck so that people know where to find thier photos.People usually grab us aside for portrait type set ups too.If you like watching the working dogs you'll enjoy doing this. There are events all over the country on most weekends. It should be easy to find one near you.Let's see what you got. Post them up when you get them.
Gooddawgs
Note: As far as the competition, unless they are hired by the event and the event organizers don't want you around,it's a free country.I know our club doesn't hire a photographer.Everybody there just shows up.Most clubs don't have the extra money to spend.Big,National type events may be different. It's always good to ask.
Let's see what you got. Post them up when you get them.
This is my site in its meger begingings. I have a bunch of photos that need to be uploaded, but we're leaving town this afternoon, so it will have to wait 'till Monday.

You're off to a great start, Erin! (I'm just starting out myself). I think pet photography is like any other field of photography - you must have your own unique style, and be really good at what you do. People are more than willing to pay for quality work. Best of luck to you!

I really like that one on the beach with the dog and the ball.Is that an Irish Setter or reddish colored Golden Retriever? It's hard to tell when they're wet.

Here's a couple from a pet shoot I did in the fall; the pet owner loved outfits. She had one for every occasion and every holiday. She is now very happy I took the photographs because poor little Buster passed away last week.

My dad has often told me to investigate pet photography. I do believe the market could be rather large. I just don't think I'd do well directing animals.
