Here are some photo's that I took with this new lense. Although the HSM does not work in Auto Modewith my OLY E510, BH Photo was more than pleasant to ship me a replacement. New one will be here Friday. Hopefully the HSM will work. Outside of that, it is pretty heavy, but I plan shooting on a monopod.

See what you all think of the picture's.

While it's a little difficult to judge from the smaller image size it does appear that optically the lens is working nicely. Too bad about the HSM but B&H are tops when it comes to customer support. thumb.gif

I just ordered this lense from Adorama - I had been on the fence for awhile but decided to give it a try. Not sure about the weight without IS but will see....

I own this lens, and have been thrilled to death with it. The weight takes some getting used to, but the optics are sharp.

Alright, forgive my possible newbieness but...

Why is the keyslot, and surrounding area sharp as a tack, yet the "Sportster 1200 Roadster" part OOF?

I've been having problems with my lens similar to this and I want to know if this because I'm not well versed enough in DOF or a limitation of the lens. I believe my problems were shooting at the long end of the lens with the f/2.8. So, iffy lens, or bad user? headscratch.gif

If it is my fault, a concise resource or 2 on DOF, etc. I understand the mechanics of it all, but I've always been a bit fuzzy on the calculations for DOF and doing it on the fly.

Thanks, and congrats on the new lens to the OP!

This is indeed a DOF effect. Bottom line, if you see one area of an image that's tack sharp, and another that's blurry, this is DOF. There are some exceptions, but that's the rule to remember.

As for DOF, try this: http://dofmaster.com/dofjs.html

Just plug in camera, E-510, subject distance (can't know for sure but I'd guess 15-20ft), aperture (probably f2.8), focal length (guessing 200mm for the second), then hit calculate.

It should tell you you've got a little under 2 inches of DOF in that circumstance (again, looks about right to me)

What was your focal length on this shot? I looked at the reflections and could not see you anywhere in them.... maybe its my amateur (sp?) eye, but I couldn't find you in the pic (reflection). I have considered purchasing this same lens, nice to see some samples from it.

    Rocketmann...

The first picture was taken from 20 to 25 ft away. The second shot was about 8 ft away. I put the bike at an angle and took the shot from an angle as well. Thats why you probably do not see me. It was taken at f2.8 with a shutter speed (Guessing) around 1600. Can't remember to be honest with you. I posted these pic's, because there was not a whole lot to go off of when I researched this lense. That's why I posted the pic's, to give others who are on the fense about buying this lense a better judgement. By all means, I am not a "Pro" when it comes to photography.
