Deer at Sunrise

I appear to have an interesting problem. I used an XTI with a Tamron 18-270, zoomed out to 270mm. I set the f-stop at 22 to get a larger depth of field. My focal point was the face of the deer on the left. It appears like the tree in front of the deer AND the tree behind the deer are both in better focus. I used to do a lot of photography 20 years ago, but am just really learning in hte digital age...is this something typical with autofocus cameras.

f/22 at 270mm was the problem.

f/8 would render a shallower dof but a fast enough shutter speed to avoid blurring the image...hand held?

Yes, handheld and fast. The deer were nervous.

Normally...for these type of shots...I would start out one stop less than the lens was capable of when using a longer lens and aperture priority.

Rick is correct. In this case, using F22 only gave you a shutter of 1/60 sec., much too slow to handhold at 270mm.

Thanks. I was hoping to get the deer and the trees in front and back sharp.
