many, many hits for only one photo

my apologies if this has come up before, but i didn't find anything really useful in searching the forums.

i'm curious about one photo (not the first one that shows up) of mine in one gallery that receives an inordinate number of hits/views in the category medium only. i have not been with smugmug for very long, but this seems odd and perhaps buggy. the gallery was submitted to a group, but the photo in question is not the one that shows on that group's page (since i've set another 'feature' image), and it isn't in the list of that group's most popular photos. however, even since the beginning of this month this one photo has received 250+ hits in the medium category (with 1 thumb view), while only 7 other thumbnails have been viewed in the rest of the gallery. the ratios for february were similar.

is this just an inaccuracy in smugmug's counting scheme? the photo is, of course, amazing, but probably not *that* amazing. my statcounter info doesn't really shed light on this, either. the photo is keyworded, but i can't imagine that people search for this stuff that often. ...

any idea what's going on?

Do you have external linking turned on? Share button, right click protection? It only takes one person to link to your photo in a forum or blog and you could get hundreds even hundreds of thousands of hits on that one photo in a very short time.

right click protection is on and external links are allowed. i did see someone with a similar question here, and i have the same motivation - curiosity, not prevention of use. the trend in hits has continued for a few weeks now, but i see what you mean. if i have linking turned on, and statcounter doesn't really tell me anything, then i probably have to live with it.
