These are from the Hoh Rainforest area in Olympic National Park.
As I was driving home yesterday morning the light got interesting and I thought there may be some good landscape opportunities, so I changed my plans and made an impulse trip back into the rain forest to see if I could capture it. Unfortunately the light didn't pan out for landscapes, but I got really lucky when I stumbled upon a single elk which was soon joined by two others, and soon after two of them went into the pond to eat.
I almost didn't pack my 100-400 lens on the trip as I was there to shoot the beach and rainforest but I'm glad I did! I definitely need to head back there during rut and get the males with their headgear in place.

Yeah, like I said, I need to go find them during horny season (literally and figuratively)
They're gorgeous animals, and huge, they only trail the moose in size (in the deer family).

Interesting, I thought the same thing, they're 1,000 lb. vegetarian dogs

Thanks Dan! I was very lucky to catch them at the right time.

Thanks Benjamin, of the few hundred photos I took, that was the only one with teeth

You can never plan what you'll bump into out there indeed, it pays to be prepared as you were.

I thought you said that your 100-400 wasn't very sharp. Maybe it wasn't you after all...
