What small case would you folks recommend for carrying an EOS 50D with the battery grip and a mounted Tamron 18-270mm lens? The bags I've looked at all fit fine without the battery grip, but I need something that will fit WITH the battery grip.

Thanks in advance!

In the Tamrac line maybe look at the holters Model 5629, Pro Digital Zoom 9 and Model 5630, Pro Digital Zoom 10. The latter is a bit deeper which would give you some extra room for a longer lens in the future and help keep the lens suspended and safer now.

(I think both would provide plenty of room for now and even some extra padding down in the lens well. The Pro Digital Zoom 10 just has that much more room.)

I have one of the smaller Tamrac holsters and the bag has decent design, features and construction.

    Thanks for the info.

I'm thinking it's going to be a long time before I can spring for another lens, and I want to be able to pack as small as possible for travelling on the motorcycle. I've got one of the big Tamrac bags leftover from my F1n days as well.

I wrestle also with the concept of hauling a laptop in the same bag, or keeping a light/portable camera-only bag (which I think would see more use) and packing the laptop separately.

I'm also looking at the Camera Armor that B&H sells, but don't see any listed for the 50D and I'm not sure the buttons and dimensions are a match with the 40D. I'm guessing they probably are?

Unfortunately I do not yet see a version of Camera Armor fitted for the Canon 50D. I doubt that the version for the 40D is a close enough fit so I'm afraid I recommend you wait.

Then again, you could contact the manufacturer and see if they have a proper answer:

    Camera Armor
I just now received this response about the Camera Armor:

    Dear John,
Thank you for your interest in our Camera Armor products.
We may be introducing Camera Armor for the 50D by spring of this year. We’ll try to notify you via e-mail when this product becomes available.

The current 40D “skin” will fit, however the buttons near the LCD will not be labeled correctly and the USB connection on the side does not line up exactly. Some users find these compromises to be acceptable.
