Red-tailed hawk

The wife and I were at Lake Draper yesterday enjoying the beautiful day and came across two red-shouldered hawks mating. I stopped the Durango, jumped out to get the shot and was too late. We parked and waited, they must have a nest in the area because they kept flying in circles just above us. Finally they landed in a tree and that allowed me to position myself to get some images of theses birds. I got my camera ready while the wife walked towards the tree they were in. They flew right in front of me and I was able to get several great images. This is one of those images. This hawk was only 25-30 feet from me. Handheld

Gorgeous shot, but I do not think this is a red tailed hawk. It looks a broad-winged hawk, but I am not certain. I do not usually get to see broad-winged hawks. It could also be a rough-legged hawk if they are in your area. Look into these two.

Whatever it is, it's a great capture. Looks like you have some schmootz on your sensor, BTW.

Yesterday I took many images of both birds and mis-identified this hawk. It is a light juvenile red-shouldered hawk.

Hey Duane maybe you can help us with ID'ing my hawk shots on the "Better Hawk Shots" thread.

    Thanx

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"
