Filter recommendations for macro

I recently purchased a Canon EF-S 60mm f2.8 Macro, I thought the threads were 58...but they are 52mm so I'll have to purchase a new filter. I use SMC/HMC multicoated skylight filters on all of my other lenses. This is my first macro lens and I have no idea what will work best for proetection + increasing contrast. The lens focusses pretty ponderously compared to my other lenses, not surprising for a macro. I'm afraid that adding a filter and the increased diffraction may make focussing worse. I'm not opposed to buying a SMC UV filter for it, but if I could go cheap on it that would be great, OR if there is some kind of other non UV filter which would be recommended I'd get that.

I really like the Hoya HMC and have had no problems using them. I don't have a filter on my Tamron 90mm, f2.8 macro yet but that's what I'll be getting.
