Practice

I took a few practice shots at a recent wedding reception. For the record, I do NOT interfere in any way with the hired help; I go out of my way to make sure I do not do that! I received a gift card for Christmas and I finally decided to purchase an Expo disk with it.

Reception Venue. Hand held shot, no VR lens :( wanted to show how the room was lit with pink and purple

This one was taken with my purse camera (P80) (well you never know when you might want to take a picture and I can't keep the D80 in the purse!)

This is the top of the card box on the gift table. The room wasn't dark but I was trying to capture how the decorations were lit up.

This one was an accident. I was going to take a picture of the stairs. I had pressed the shutter half-way then these two started walking up the stairs. No big deal, I put the camera down but somewhere along the way it fired anyway. Black and white and I ended up liking it.

Used expo disk for white balance, bounced flash off the ceiling.

Thats it, only took about 20 shots. The rest of the time I regreted having the extra weight in my purse!

I can see that the purple made shooting a definite challenge even with an expo disc. I think #3 is the best of the bunch and a really funky cool shot to boot. thumb.gif #2 has potential. I know that you were shooting with a VR lens but have tried correcting the distortion in post at all? A little perspective control would work wonders on the image. #1 & 5 were hurt by the purple light a bit.

I've never found that hitting WB perfect with off-colored lighting is worth it.... and, actually, I"ve always felt it kind of kills the mood of the original.

I might have simply set a tungsten (or whatever gives a good balance) WB and kept things 'pink' looking... keeping the mood they obviously went through a lot of trouble to create is more important than some random 'perfect' white balance that simply doesn't represent the scene.

I like the idea you had with the shot from outside.

Thanks for the comments. I agree with you about the lighting....didn't know what it would be but like a kid with a new toy, had to use the expo disk anyway.

Yeah the downside to correcting the lighting sometimes is that you do totally lose the mood that the actual setting had because of that funky lighting. Usually a lot of those are best left w/ the tint. I really like #3 for that reason.
