    From similar thread on advrider.com:
    To get make the erroneous number go away only takes a few clicks.

    First go to your Private Messages page. In the header on the right is your number of messages and a box. Click on the box, this checks all messages.

    Now go to the bottom of the page and in the right corner is a "Selected Messages" menu click on that and then click on "Mark as read".

    Your PM counter should be reset and life will be normal again.

    There is a side affect though... you may not be able to play the piano
