I accidentally deleted a folder of photos from my PC's hard drive -- as in flushed them from my Recycle Bin :cry. Is there a file recovery program out there that can recover them for me?

I have had success with STELLAR PHOENIX PHOTO RECOVERY SOFTWARE .....It did somethings I did not like.....one it recoverd the raw and jpegs separately in different fil folders......it also totally renumbered everyting, however all my exif data seems to be intact so re-filing by date helpped out tremendously there, but all the raw files taht ai had already processsed and had a final jpg of .....I am having to try and hunt down by date from my smugmug gallery ...........

    Good Luck

    Hi Art,

Thank you for that link. I downloaded the software, ran it, and was not able to recover those files. :cry:cry:cry I guess that the area of the hard drive where they were stored has been written over. Strange, I was able to find photos that I had deleted back in November and December and could recover those had I wanted to. But not the ones I deleted last week.

I do have the photos uploaded to a smugmug gallery, so at least I still have JPG versions of them, but all the PSD's and RAW files are gone....

As you've experienced, windows doesn't actually remove the file when it's deleted. Only it's directory entry gets dumped. During normal operation, Windows writes files where it can. In a very general sense, this can be anywhere there's room. Windows also tries to write files where none exist and where there's room to make the file contiguous. Of course that's not always possible which is why you found some files but not others. Creating files, moving files, deleting files--these all impact your ability to recover lost files. Defragmenting a disk is a good example of something that moves files on a regular basis--and which tries to make files contiguous--and can chew through deleted files in no time.

More than likely, the files you want are gone--at least with the technology you have at your finger tips--because they've been overwritten.
