so, i am looking into getting an infrared filter for my camera.

i already have the cokin 'p' series adapter and holder and all that, i know they have an infrared filter for that system.

i have also heard that the hoya IR filter is one of the best.
does anyone have any experience with these 2 filters? i am leaning towards the cokin filter seeing as i could use it with my holder on multiple lenses, whereas the hoya i would need to get the specific filter thread size.

thanks!!

    Craig,
For the Cokin system you'll probably want to look for the Kodak Wratten filters and choose the cutoff sensitivity that you plan to use.

I have a modified camera that I use a Hoya and a Chinese brand filter on and they both produce about the same resolution to my sensor but at different cutoff wavelengths.

The D80 is not widely considered to be IR sensitive - do you plan to use another body for your IR work?

    hey thanks for the reply!!
i have heard as well that the d80 is not too great for IR, and i do not have another body to modify or anything as of yet :)

but i did find some nice IR shots that people have made with an unmodded d80, and the hoya filter seems to be the standard. apparently, with the cokin system holder, there is too many light leaks!

i do understand that i will need some pretty long exposure times (a minute or more!) to achieve the look i want, but thats a sacrifice i am willing to make!

hopefully, when the time comes to upgrade to a better body (d700! haha yeah right :) ) i will retain my d80 and get it modified for IR only!

but for now, i will give the hoya filter a try, i think i may be able to find one on eBay!
