Way to offer Low-Res with watermark to customers without having watermark in prints?

I'm looking to sell low-res files to clients for their own blog/facebook use. I want them to have my watermark on them, though.

But I don't want the watermark to appear in the prints they order.

Is there a way to do this?

Thanks,
Andrea

No way to do this with SmugMug, and sell them as DDs and Prints - I'm very sorry.

Not with Smugmug. You could with Exposure Manager. They allow you to have a separate file for downloads and prints. For that matter you can have a separate file for each aspect ratio of print, or even for each size of print. And you can upload proof-only versions even for digital files.

Instead of watermarking why not just sign the photos with your signature just like an artist would a painting...........then they could have prints done and your signature is still in the pic and not a terrible looking watermark........If I sell a disk of photos to someone, they are always signed, not with a © but just with my Signature and I also scan a notarized copy of a release that states what the phtos can and cannot be used for and the sizes of prints that can and cannot be made off the files....this is in a doc on the disk and also they havea paper copy that I suggest they do not loose.....as getting a hold of me to get another copy couldtake some time, being an outdoor type.....if shooting wildlife I do not take cell with me into the woods.

How about applying the watermark in PS before uploading to SmugMug. That way, the clients get downloads with watermarks on them. Then for print orders, use the delay proof feature to replace the order with un-watermarked images. Very inconvenient, I admit, but should work for small orders.

Aha, hadn't thought of that. I've never done the delayed order feature. Apparently it lets me change the files of what they order? That could work. Thanks.

The "gotcha" is that it also replaces the photo in the gallery, so unless you re-upload the watermarked image after sending the order to printing any new orders will get the DD without the watermark.

Another (ugly) option would be to shoot wide enough that you could put the mark in a corner and re-crop the image before sending it to printing.

That would avoid the upload/re-upload hassle, but it would mean the watermark would have to be fairly small and you would have to hand crop every photo ordered to remove the watermark.

EDIT: And to be clear, proof delay does NOT play nice with digital downloads. The download link is immediately available regardless of the proof delay.

Agreed. That solution really doesn't work either.

    Hi Andrea,

    Try this:
Create one gallery with your watermark embedded in the originals you upload - and only offer digital downloads for said purpose... mwink.gif

Then have a separate gallery (without the watermark embedded) that you offer prints only from - can even name the galleries accordingly for ease of customer use... :D
