#1 has the makings of a wonderful portrait. It looks like an old world oil painting. I don't care for the boys expression, but the lighting and mood you've captures are excellent.
Thanks for the comments The setup provided a bit of a challenge--either the boy or the dog were right but not both (don't you HATE it when that happens?) In the past I've been able to correct this with a bit o' photoshop magic...but in this case, I couldn't figure out what I could do (any suggestions? The challenge I think is to get the facial shape and shadows to shuck and jive with whatever might be done.)

Camera exposure set at +1.0ev. 3 SB-900 setup (Commander flash did not fire). Remote #1 setup front and left of the boy (~9') with a -2.3ev adjustment (for light fill). Remote #2 set up right and front of the dog (~4') with a +1.7ev adjustment. Both remotes were firing through white umbrellas. Adjustments in exposure in Aperture 2 and light/dark adjustments in Photoshop.

Does that help?
The skin processing in the other other shots are bit much for me. The last shot needs more balck tones on my monitor.
