Will customers get the stop sign?

Hi everyone.

I'm wondering if I post a low-res file, and customer wants to order a super-huge print, will they get some kind of warning? Will it tell them "um, that print is gonna be pixelated/blurry... sure you want to do that?"

I'm trying to figure out how much I need to intervene with customers who want to order large prints.... any advice would be welcome.

Thanks!

I believe if a customer attempts to order a print that is too large, smugmug will display an error message that the image file is not large enough. Also on the control panel you can set proofing on which will notify you when a print is ordered and give you time to replace it with a larger res image if you want. It doesn't allow you to cancel the order though.

    Hi MD,

If your image doesn't have high enough resolution for the larger print sizes, they won't be available for purchase. See here for our minimum resolution requirements:
    http://www.smugmug.com/help/print-quality

So if you want to allow viewers to purchase a 30x40 print, your image needs to be at least 1650x2200.

Travis is right, with the Pro account you can upload smaller files and then replace them with full resolution images after they've been purchased. It's called Proof Delay, and it's awesome:
    http://www.smugmug.com/help/proof-retouch-replace
    http://wiki.smugmug.net/display/SmugMug/Proof+Delay

But, your image still needs to meet our minimum resolution for that size to be offered. So make sure the photos you upload are big enough to offer the print sizes you want customers to be able to purchase, even if they're not full quality.

Does that help? Holler if you need anything else. :)

Thank you both. This is helping.

I'm also glad to read that Bay/EZ will adjust the image for printing, so that I don't need to worry about PPI.

Once again, SmugMug rocks. Thank you!

Sorry - Are you a Smugmug client?

I've seen your site (very nice BTW) but see no indicators of Smugmug collaboration.

    So; are you a Smuggy?

edit: so after a little digging and clicking on a "client" name was I taken to your smugmug site so Wendee's answers above should suffice. Good luck thumb.gif

One problem I just came across that I didn't think of before is when the file is large enough for a certain print size but the customer then does a heavy crop. I just had this happen hence my post. It would be nice to have the ability to remove items.
