'This month > Photos viewed: 173099' vs. 'Total for all Galleries: Hits: 525108'

Hello,
My "Control Panel ---> Stats" page shows: "Photos viewed: 173099". Yet when I click on 'more details' link that takes you to the 'March Stats' page where at the bottom it says: "Total for all Galleries:"... "Hits: 525108"
Why is there a discrepancy? Do these numbers mean something different?
