Client Feedback / Proofing

Hello folks!

I've been using SmugMug for a few months now and am really liking it. Thank you! I just have one question - I've searched the forums and racked my brain, and I can't find the answer. Forgive me if it's been asked before - I appreciate any help or direction you can give.

Similar to this person, I'm trying to cut down on the editing I do before a client has a chance to see the initial round of photos. I'll, of course do SOME editing before they see them, color correcting and cropping, and full editing / B&W, etc. of a selection of 'favorites' to steer them, but I feel I've lost precious time editing 100 photos when the client eventually ends up only purchasing 20. For me, I'd like to get their feedback on those 20 ahead of time and focus my time on those.

With that in mind, I'm trying to find a way to get that feedback from the client. If I upload 100 photos to SmugMug for them to review, how do they tell me which 20 they like?

I'm hesitant to use the proofing feature because I'm afraid a client wouldn't want to purchase photos that aren't fully edited yet. I've thought about using the thumbs up/down feature, but that doesn't 'alert' me to the ones they like unless I look at each photo individually (does it?). Another idea would be to use the comment / rating feature - it's a bit more cumbersome than thumbs because they'd have to log in, but then they could leave a star rating or a specific comments about what they like / don't like ("would like to see this in B&W", "cropped", etc.), and I would get an alert via email and on my Control Panel. Once they have left their feedback, I'd do the final edits, upload the photos for purchase (removing the old photos or hiding them).

Thoughts? Am I overcomplicating this? Is there any other way you can think to give feedback on photos via the interface?

Thanks in advance for your comments!

I see there was no reply to this. Now I was going to post the same...but I will just bump this up from oblivion.

is there a way for smugmug to handle this in an easy way?

Typically I'll email clients a link to a gallery ("Smith - Proofs") - they'll email me back a list of photos (filenames are shown, so thay can say, "IMG_1234") they want me to work up. Out of hundreds they'll chose say, 20-30. I'll work those up and upload to a new gallery ("Smith - Selects"). And off we go!
