Optimizing PS with ATI Radeon HD 4870

Hello Everyone,
I just bought a new Mac Pro, in part so I could upgrade my video card to have more open images in PS.
On my old Mac Pro, with a Radeon XT1900 card, I could have 9 images open in PS.
My new Mac Pro has an ATI Radeon 4870 (with 8 cores running at 2.26 ghz, and 12 gb ram). Despite the upgrade, I am still limited to 9 images open in PS, unless I turn off OpenGL.
Is there any way to overcome this limit of 9 images?
