Need help adding a text box to homepage

I'm wondering if there is any way to add my own 'news' box to my homepage, similar to what the 'smugnews' looks like that only we see. I know nothing about HTML or code, so please be gentle! I've gone thru some of the pages of the forum and don't see the same question...thanks for any help.

    It would be easier if we saw your homepage. I would add it to the biobox as
    it is an existing div/container only on the homepage.

    I thought about adding it to the bio box, but would prefer to have it totally seperate...we already have a lot of text and I'm afraid it will not be noticed as easily.
