Can someone explain why I can type in my url / address bar two slightly different url's and reach the same photo image in my gallery?

So what's the purpose of having the extra _xxxxx?
Is this a security "thing"?
I can type this as shown or without anything beyond the last number "6"

Now a bit bazaar.... I type in this EXACT same url here in dgrin (less the extended _xxxxxx)
and the address mysteriously changes to this:
http://www.360photostock.com/gallery/6680864_hQZdR#427479216

Thank you in advance, just trying to understand how this works.

You're still getting directed to the gallery with the 2nd link. Gallery + gallery key. 6680864_hQZdR

Old images or old galleries (created/uploaded before a certain date) will work without the image key or gallery key. Newer images or newer galleries will not work without the corresponding gallery key or image key. It was an improvement to security that was added more than a year ago. In order to keep from breaking existing links, existing galleries and images were "grandfathered" in to keep working the old way. Newly created things require the full id and key.
