Copyright gone in right-click saves?!?

I was rather astounded today when someone pointed out that saves done off my display images (other than original size) had no copyright info. Or anything else -- but the maker/copyright is really a concern.

I am not a pro, generally would allow anyone to print/save any of my photos for their own use, but I believe in labeling internally that the photographs are mine, and would expect someone taking them to maintain the copyright.

Only to find out Smugmug is removing it.

What's up? That seems a rather... inappropriate approach to take.

Note I'm not talking thumbnails (where it might matter performance wise), but large size photos.

Generally speaking stripping out copyright would seem something one should never do.

Is there a switch or setting I may have missed?

You are correct. Smugmug removes all metadata (including copyright info) from all the sizes except your original.

This has been discussed and asked for many times before (here's one thread) and is (in my opinion) a very reasonable request and something Smugmug should do.

From previous discussions, it sounds like their spirit is willing, but we have no idea how they actually prioritize the importance of the issue to have any idea when this might happen.

Sorry, should have researched harder first.

I'm really surprised given the number of professionals who sell images here. Or do the pro version of download only include original size(s) uploaded, and so preserve it?

I guess a first cut and not reliable approach is turn off right click, but I often link images on Smugmug into other forums, and really would have expected the result to include copyright.

I guess I start to understand why so many people here who don't really sell photos still put watermarks or labels on their images.

Yup. But there are engineering, performance, storage and speed issues to consider, too. So all of that goes in the mix.

It's on the list though. Thanks.

I've read some of those replies, and I also find it rather annoying that performance and speed continue to be mentioned. Other than thumbnails, maintaining at least the copyright, but even more complete metadata, is negligable. Do the math.

Engineer and programmer time I understand.

    Do the math.
